Plan Overview This plan was prepared by the Tennessee Department of Health, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages each state to develop a screening plan based on state-specific data. This document summarizes the clinical recommendations and tools for a more targeted approach to childhood lead screening in Tennessee.

Lead is a toxic metal used for many years in products found in and around our homes. Although lead-based paint was banned for use in residential structures in 1978, deterioration of old buildings, remodeling and renovation of older houses, and lead in dust and soil result in a continuing health threat — especially for young children.
