Mohawk are an Iroquoian -speaking people with communities in southeastern Canada and northern New York State, primarily around Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. As one of the five original members of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Mohawk are known as the Keepers of the Eastern Door.

Mohawk, Iroquoian-speaking North American Indian tribe and the easternmost tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy. Within the confederacy they were considered to be the ‘keepers of the eastern door.’ At the time of European colonization, they occupied three villages west of what is now Schenectady, New York.

Culture and History The Mohawk are traditionally the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Six Nations Confederacy or the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Our original homeland is the north eastern region of New York State extending into southern Canada and Vermont.
